Nightlights

IMG_0574The nightlight in our house went out recently. We only have one, and it sits at the top of the stairs. It is an inexpensive and unnoticed device, especially compared to other light fixtures in the house. But it provides illumination to the area where a stumble could have serious consequences. Sometimes you need to be the nightlight for your organization. It’s not flashy, but it may be your most important role. As a nightlight, you…

  • Don’t demand attention. You’re willing to go unnoticed during normal times, knowing that you will play a vital role when things are darkest and most challenging.
  • Have a surprising reach. In calmer times, people may misjudge your leadership abilities, thinking that you don’t have much impact. When all the other lights are off, my nightlight reaches much of my house. The same can be true for you.
  • Are consistent. The mission of your church or ministry or non-profit shouldn’t change with the seasons. In that nightlight role, you resist the temptation to chase after the next “silver bullet” and instead offer calm and steady direction.
