“Breathe”

Last week began with serious technology issues that caused me to worry about losing email access along with my contacts and calendar. That would be a big deal for virtually anyone reading this blog. When you’re dependent on technology, as I am, and you are your own IT department, it’s really a big deal (i.e., “trying not to freak out”). I spent a good bit of time on Monday and Tuesday resolving the issue. In the middle of all this, I paused to listen to a new Jonny Diaz song called “Breathe.” The words of the chorus are:

Breathe, just breathe Come and rest at my feet And be, just be Chaos calls but all you really need Is to just breathe

As powerful as the words are, the musical development of the song is even better. Take a minute to listen to it. It was a needed reminder. The truth is that some kind of chaos is always calling to me. Sometimes it is louder than others, and last week it seemed deafening. But even in those moments, I have a choice to make. I can choose to slow down and breathe. I can trust that God is with me and that His promise of a peace that passes understanding is for me. I can remember my identity as a child of God, something that can’t be taken away by technology glitches or anything else. Do you need to take a deep breath today?
