The Process
A 1- or 2-day retreat with an outside facilitator is often the ideal setting for dealing with challenging issues or making strategic decisions that have long-reaching impacts. An experienced facilitator can structure the process with the end in mind, keep the conversation moving, and make sure that all viewpoints are expressed.
Example
A non-denominational church had grown dramatically in its first 15 years, and as often happens, experienced a number of growing pains. One particularly sensitive area was the role of the elders. During a 1½ day retreat, the elders were able to have healthy discussions about several recent conflicts. Out of this, they arrived at a common and clear understanding about their role relative to the senior pastor, staff, and other lay leaders.
